I wanted a healthier pulled pork so I went on a mission to find one that was not sopping in BBQ sauce or any other kind of sodium induced sauce! Then I recalled a great Christmas gift that we get every year from friends of ours. It’s a spice blend that you can use on any kind of meat really. I always used it for our pork chops when I want something quick and easy. Then I put two and two together and realized I could make a pulled pork with this!
When I reached out to my friend for the recipe (I actually ran out way before Christmas this year!) I went to look it up and realized that the woman who created it, actually uses it for pulled pork all the time too! So I suppose I’m not so genius after all. Oh well I still get to share it with you. You can refer back to The Yummy Life to find out just how to make this blend to your own liking or if you need to know what “mace” is since it’s one of the ingredients, because no it’s not the kind you spray in the eyes of a dangerous person.
Spices you will need:
- seasoned salt
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- sweet paprika
- smoked paprika
- chili powder (mild, medium, or hot)
- celery salt
- black pepper
- sage
- cumin
- cayenne
- allspice
- cloves
- mace
What else you will need:
Baking sheet
Parchment Paper
Dark brown sugar
2-4 tbsp of BBQ Sauce
2 lb Pork Loin
Once you’ve blended the spice blend, cut the pork loin into 4 pieces and rub the blend all over it until it’s completely covered. Place in a slow cooker and cook for 8-10 hours.
Remove from the crock pot, shred the pork using two forks and place the pork back into the crock pot. Mix the pork with the BBQ sauce and let it sit for 20 min.
I served it with a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top of a bed of lettuce and it was perfect!! It was light yet tasty, filling yet it didn’t leave me with that “bloated, omg I ate too much of that awesome pulled pork!”
